Former President of Notre Dame of MD University to Lead Archdiocesan School Board

Archbishop William E. Lori announced today that he has appointed Dr. Mary Pat Seurkamp, former President of Notre Dame of Maryland University, Vice-Chair of the Archdiocese of Baltimore School Board.  She succeeds Mr. Frank Bramble, Sr., who held the position since the Board’s creation in 2011.  Dr. Seurkamp, who retired from Notre Dame in 2012 after 15 years as president, will help lead the 23-member board, which includes leads in education, business, and philanthropy.

Of her appointment, Dr. Seurkamp, who attended Catholic schools from grade school through college, said, “I believe in Catholic education and have seen firsthand the impact a Catholic education can have in the life of a student.  I look forward to advancing the work of the Archdiocesan School Board, whose members are committed to setting the highest standards for our Catholic schools and strengthening the system for the benefit of current and future generations of students.”

The board supports and offers guidance to the Archdiocese and the Department of Catholic Schools with strategic planning efforts, recommends policies for the Archdiocesan school system, and advises the Archbishop, Chancellor of Education and Superintendent concerning advancement, finances, facilities, and leadership matters affecting the Archdiocese’s 48 Catholic schools.

Mr. Bramble was appointed Vice-Chair of the School Board by Archbishop Edwin O’Brien after serving as Chair of the Archdiocese’s 2010 Blue Ribbon Committee on Catholic Schools. The Committee’s Strategic Plan for Catholic Schools, which consisted of 56 recommendations for ensuring the long-term sustainability of Catholic schools, helped to stabilize the Archdiocesan school system and improve enrollment system-wide.

“To have someone of Mary Pat’s experience and commitment is a tremendous asset for our school system,” Archbishop Lori said. “She is widely respected as a tireless champion of education and of Catholic education, and will provide us with a seamless transition in this key leadership position.  I would also like to express heartfelt thanks to Frank Bramble for his many years of committed service to Catholic schools.  Frank’s top priority in every role he’s held has been the students, and the accessibility of a Catholic education to as many children as possible. This noble mission has served us well and led to a rebirth of Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.”
